    "Great!" 2010-04-27

I received my netbook last week and I LOVE it! It's light and small enough to carry in my everyday purse. I purchased this computer for my European vacation this summer and I think it will be easy to travel with.

"Great, but a Few Warnings" 2010-04-26
    By ALLTONE (The West Coast)
About of use, power-use. Watching an on-line movies right now. Here a few things you might like to know:

    1. The white one is a little toy-like. Not saying I don't like it, but as far as making a business impression...uhm, no.
    2. You get Win 7 starter, it's not a full version. Some functions are disabled, like changing your desktop background. Not a big deal until you run into one of the limitations, and then you'll go on-line looking for some hack to get around it.
    3. If you think you'll pull it out the box and use it on a trip that day/next morning...think again. ASUS recommends like a 8 hours charge, but on top of that there are the Windows updates. I counted soemthing like 40 in the first two days. There will be long periods of time when the computer is frozen in shut-down / update mod. Grrrr
    4. The ASUS on-line storage is somewhat of a hidden bonus, and it doesn't work for a lot of users if you read the forum. Apparently, ASUS is not too excited about you exactly figuring out how to access this soemwhat hidden service and authenticating yourself as a free user.
    5. It did well with 1G memory, but slowed remarkably is large file manipulation. I went for the package with the CD reader and the 2G memory, which I installed the second day.
    6. It is slow to find wireless and configure for internet access. It works fine, but takes 10-20 times as long as my Dell or HP to finish its config. routine.
    7. The hard disk may seem big, but after adding Office '07, my email database, music and data files from my desktop it's already 2/3rds full. Fine, but just keep that in mind if you are used to laptops & desktops with big hard drives. I guess this would be a problem if you planned on loading a bunch of movies.
    8. The ASUS gadgets are annoying and useless, I still haven't figured out how to get rid of all of them.
    9. Battery life? I'm getting about 8 hours before getting worried, and that's pretty good as far as I'm concerned.
    10. No case or sleeve provided.

I guess that's enough. Great little mini, but could definitely be improved. Good closing remarks?: Light, fast, runs without any drama.

    "Nice little netbook" 2010-04-25
By DB in PA (Palo Alto, CA)
I purchased the ASUS EeePC 1005PE-MU17 about a month ago, and have been very happy with it.

    Pros:
    - Great design. Nice clamshell case; I really prefer the battery being incorporated within the case rather than sticking out the back as it does with many netbooks. I highly recommend the white finish as it doesn't show fingerprint marks at all and looks Apple-ishly cool.

    - Good keyboard. Although the smaller keyboard takes a bit getting used to, I soon found it pretty easy to type on. As others have noted, the position of the right shift key is awkward, but that's the only real issue I've had with the keyboard.

    - Great for traveling. I took it on a two-week vacation and just kept it in a backpack without a case. It's small, light, and durable.

    - Performance: generally good. Boots up quickly. It's a little slow to launch programs and do some other tasks with the 1GB ram it ships with, so I will probably upgrade to 2GB, but it's been usable. Windows 7 Starter has been fine.

    - Great for Skype.

    - Easily finds and connects to wireless networks.

    - Long battery life, although I'm getting about 8-9 hours rather than the 11 hours advertised.

    Cons:
    - Mouse bar and pad feel a little cheap and don't always work well (may just take some getting used to).

    - ASUS Expressgate, although theoretically a quick way to use web and email without waiting for Windows to boot up, has a nonstandard web browser that doesn't work well with some sites and email clients. I've found it better to just wait a few minutes for Windows to boot up.

    - The product ships with a default screen saver that is incredibly annoying - loud, cheesy music (think early 70s Mannix episodes)accompanied by a video of ASUS products. It's easy enough to change, but it was very startling at first (could be very embarrassing in a meeting).

Overall, I'd definitely recommend the ASUS EeePC 1005PE-MU17, but would suggest getting the extra memory to boost performance.

    "Excellent product!" 2010-04-25
    By ACBP
I love this computer! It's really what I was looking for! It's small but not uncomfortable. The specs are just perfect for home use. The screen it's small but for those who don't play nor see movies it's perfect. It is a perfect computer in a tiny package.

    "Great for trips" 2010-04-22
By C. M. Rowell (Newbury Park, CA USA)
We bought this for a 2 week Japan trip so the kids wouldn't be bored on the long airplane rides. Loaded it with movies and music. Worked out great. We would use it at the hotel in the morning to plan out our day using online guides or write trip reports and backup our camera photos. The kids used it to wind down with some videos before bed or keep from getting bored on the longer train rides. Light enough to put in a daypack, and also didn't weigh down our main travel backpacks much.

Also used it on a recent business trip. Battery life is great if you use the power saving function. Flew across the US on 2 flights, organized photos and listened to music and still had 3hrs of battery life left at the end of the day. Also spent time uninstalling bloated MS Office, which isp pe-installed, but you have to sign up for a trial license for it. Open Office will go on it instead.

Using it more and more around the house, too. Much easier to move around with it than our older big laptop. I like that it boots up so quickly, even under Windows. The Linux-based quick-start OS is also nice, although I don't think the screen aspect ratio is set correctly under it and I wish I could install my own Linux programs on there.

The high-def videos I've shot with our Canon T1i camera playback a bit choppy, but the videos we've loaded on to it, which use a bit of compression, all playback fine.

    "Happy with purchase" 2010-04-29
    By Pink (Los Angeles, CA)
Very happy with purchase. I bought this because I needed a portable computer to use around the house. I find myself using it in bed a-lot instead of having to go to the computer room. It's small and compact, I purchased a small mouse to go with it. My husband has used it a few times too because it's so lightweight and simple to pick up and access. The battery life is very long and I only need to plug in overnight so I'm happy with this. I do wish the screen on the computer was bigger, but that was one of the main reasons I purchased this computer I wanted something very small and easy to use.
My husband did not understand why I wanted such this small computer with no DVD burner (or other major features), but now that he sees that I just want to surf the web and check FB and e-mail... he understands. So he's happy that I'm happy. I love when he picks up my computer and uses it sometimes, he's very savvy about computer gadgets so I know he likes my little computer too.
My only complaint is that I did not purchase the pink colored computer... but overall I'm very satisfied with this purchase.
My other complaint is that the computer came with a lot of unnecessary programs that my husband had to uninstall before I started using the computer so it can go faster.

    "Quick, pretty, usable Netbook" 2010-04-28
By Nicholas M. Seetin (Alexandria, VA USA)
Let me start by saying that I read nearly every review on Amazon for this product before buying it. Some of the reviews actually seem to be for related Toshiba netbooks which have slightly different features. I am not sure if this is due to users posting reviews in the wrong place, or Amazon aggregating reviews for closely related products, but potential customers should make sure the reviewer is actually reviewing the correct product when considering their praise or criticism.

In any case, if you are considering a netbook, and you actually KNOW WHAT A NETBOOK IS, and what it should be used for, you will be happy with this netbook. I have owned it for several days now and I am loving it. Here are some of my thoughts on the subject:

    1. The keyboard:
It is great. I have not yet sat down to serious long hours of typing. I will though, as this netbook will be my main tool for finishing my thesis and eventually writing my dissertation. For the page or so I have written on it, it has been extremely comfortable. I have found in the past that I can adjust pretty well to typing on weird keyboards. I had a first gen EeePC and I was able to get used to that horrible thing. This keyboard, however, required no adjustment. I was typing pretty easily from the beginning.

    2. The screen size:
Works for me. It is a little cramped on certain websites, but a quick F11 to make the browser full-screen seems to usually do the trick.

    3. The speed:
Here, and on point 4 (OS), is where my review may not be helpful to all readers. I immediately purchased the crucial 2GB memory upgrade. It actually arrived before my netbook did. I started up the machine right out of the box and ran through the first time setup before shutting down and installing the RAM, though. Everything seemed to be decently responsive. Nevertheless, people concerned with speed should read the next portion of my review where I talk about...

    4. The operating system:
Windows 7 Starter seemed to work fine. Since, however, I am a grad student and get somewhat of a discount on Microsoft products, I opted to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional pretty soon after purchase. I have to say, I did not notice a huge leap in speed going from 1GB to 2GB of RAM on Windows 7 Starter. Yet when I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro, there was a noticeable overall improvement in the performance of the machine. I cannot explain this, as I am pretty sure that Windows 7 Starter has the same architecture as Windows 7 Pro. If anything, you would think the stripped-down Windows 7 Starter would be designed to operate efficiently within the limited resources of a netbook. In any case, I am not knocking Windows 7 Starter-- it is the standard for netbooks-- and it seemed to work fine. I just noticed an improvement when I upgraded.

    5. other software stuff and notes
I also installed MS Office 2007 Pro from the web with no problems. That and web browsing are going to be my main uses for this netbook. I have yet to attempt an install of Adobe Acrobat Pro from an external DVD drive, but I will soon (the external drive is old, from my first-gen EeePC, so I hope it works). I have watched a lot of streaming Netflix content on this without any significant problems. I think that is a pretty good measure of the machine.

    6. Battery
The battery life is amazing. I am reasonably sure it doesn't quite live up to the ideal 11 hours under my normal usage. Still, the battery lasts so long I don't even really know what to do. I am used to having to set a routine to charge my gadgets, like plugging in my iPhone before I go to bed, etc. This machine, however, has so much battery life left that it is actually confusing me. I am guessing for my usage, I'll be charging it every 1.5 to 2 days.

    7. Speakers or The Worst Part of This Netbook
Everyone has said it on here and I will repeat it. These speakers are pretty miserable. Not even just the speakers, but the maximum volume level as well. I knew it going in, so I cannot complain too much. I am able to watch Netflix stuff at night lying in bed, but only just. I am sure if there was any background noise (a fan, etc.) it would not cut it. The key though, is that this is a netbook. The combined forces of physical constraints (size and weight) and pricepoint make anything more substantial than these speakers nearly impossible. My advice is to get a good set of headphones, and also perhaps a nice compact set of speakers. I have a folding JBL On Tour speaker unit that is amazing for its size. I actually use it for most of my television watching on a regular basis.

    8. Aesthetic appeal
I find this netbook quite beautiful. Though it is listed as "Java Brown" I do not think that is an accurate color name. I would have been totally happy with "java brown," but the color of this netbook is more metallic. It is more like a burnished deep copper or bronze color on the outside, with closely spaced diagonal lines etched into it. When opened, the deep copper color which surrounds the screen is more glossy and the diagonal lines are a pattern of slightly lighter color, not etched. Very nice overall. It also just feels sturdily built.

In sum, I am very satisfied with this netbook. I hope my review helps!

    "Little dinamo..." 2010-04-28
    By Jan M.
I've had this netbook for over a month now and have had a chance to use it on the road, which was the primary reason for this purchase. It is quite the little dinamo. As suggested in previous reviews,I just went ahead and purchased the extra gig which was easy to install. It started right up.. no issues. Fast a very reliable. The battery life if more like 9 hours, but still plenty for a long flight. Love the surface on the cover, little if any fingerprint marks. Only complaint is once again the lack of sound. It was too soft and yes earphones help..Need to work on this Toshiba.

By Charles M. Thomas (San Francisco, CA)
Love it. Very compact, light, portable -- and great battery life. Have used at a coffee shop for 2 hours, with very large percentage of battery life remaining. Can't say if it would or wouldn't last 11 or 10 hours, but I know at 3 or 4 or 5 you'd have no worries, and I'd rarely stretch it that far. As with any netbook, you don't get the most powerful cpu, but that's the tradeoff for the light weight and low power-consumption. I upgraded to the max 2Gig memory, upgraded from Win7 Starter to full Win7 and bought an external DVD drive, so ended up pushing $600 altogether, but it's probably the best of breed at the moment with the great looks, the exceptional battery life and flawless functioning. Very happy with it.

"Even Better Than I Expected!" 2010-04-30
By S. Randall (Houghton Lake, MI USA)
After a couple of months of researching, I decided upon the Acer AOD250-1584 netbook. It had the main features that I wanted - Win7 Starter, 250GB HD, Bluetooth, and enhanced sound, in addition to the basics. I read every single review here before I purchased, so I already knew that this was a high-quality machine.

But I wasn't prepared for what I got. This netbook is FAST! I typically run Rising a/v, Skype, and Glary Utilities whenever the computer is on. In addition, I'm always connected to the 'net and running Windows Live, my Flock browser (with several tabs running), often a system-intensive gaming site (that used to slow my last laptop to a crawl), Open Office Calc, and notepad. At a minimum. Plus I watch the occasional YouTube video, full screen - or a whole series of them with my grandson.

Even though I haven't upgraded to 2GB of memory, I haven't had a single issue with lagging or delays in either Win7 or Linux (Ubuntu netbook remix), which I also installed. This thing runs like a top, even with everything running!

And I have to mention the sound. The speakers are pretty pitiful, even for a laptop, but plug in the headphones and WOW! I haven't heard such amazing sound from a computer EVER! That Dolby is fantastic! As a musician, I'm pretty picky about sound, and rarely use my speakers anyway. The Dolby headphone sound was a big selling feature to me, and not only was I NOT disappointed, but I am absolutely THRILLED! It's really like being in a concert hall!

As others have also said, after a couple of hours of use, the screen size is fine, and the keyboard feels natural. I have no qualms whatsoever with the smaller screen and even though I have poor eyesight, it is bright and sharp enough that I have no problems seeing even details. And while the keyboard did feel "too small" at first, I was back to my normal 130+wpm typing speed within hours of opening the box.

Re: battery life - I fully charged and discharged the battery 3 times when I first used it, and each time I got a MINIMUM of 9 hours and 15 minutes of battery life, actually using the computer during most of those hours. And keeping my screen bright so that I can see it. I was really surprised to have a battery that actually lasts as long, in use, as advertised. Very happy about that!

It has been mentioned that the touchpad is too sensitive, so I never took the sticker/protector off of it when I unpackaged it, and I have no problems. It took a little time to get used to its size but not long, and certainly the single bar over the 2 buttons hasn't caused me any problems.

The webcam and mic are excellent, and give great quality audio and video on Skype, which I use frequently.

As I try to think of anything at all that might be problematic, I come up empty. There is absolutely nothing, after the first week of use, that I deem a negative in any way. I knew I was getting a great netbook, especially for the price ($279) but for the superior functionality and performance, this computer was a STEAL!

Acer AOD250-1584 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - Up to 9 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)
I really love this netbook. There were 3 features I was looking for in a netbook.
Feature one: 9 hour battery life
    Feature two: 250GB Hard drive
    Feature Three: Bluetooth
My mom had purchased a Hewlett Packard 1030NR netbook with a 16GB flash drive, 1GB RAM, no Bluetooth, and a 3 hour battery. This netbook is ok for just office documents but I wanted more. I was replacing my old laptop computer so I wanted a netbook with a lot more horse power. I wanted a fully feature netbook at a reasonable price when I look at Hewlett Packard they wanted around $400.00. That was just outside of my budget than I saw the Acer AOD250-1584 it had all of the features I wanted and I just ordered a 2GB RAM upgrade because I do a lot of photography and the 250GB hard drive helps. When I was working as an Electrical Engineer money was not a problem but I am in a tight economy so I went with the Acer. Although netbooks do not come with a DVD drive it was not that important when doing photography and video I use 8GB to 32GB SDHC cards instead of a DVD drive. I can still watch movies from my 32GB SDHC cards when traveling on a train or plane. On my desktop I take DVD movies and dump them to a 32GB SDHC cards for my netbook.
The LED back light screen is very even in sunlight. The keyboard is small for my big hands but I adjusted to it. When I install MS Office and other programs I took it out for a Wi-Fi test drive at McDonalds, Starbucks, Culvers, and a local coffee shop it works great. I sent out some resumes and cover letters on my email and other employers wanted them faxed so I used my cell phone to fax out my resumes and cover letters. Then I got conformation faxes sent out but the cell phone gets very hot when sending out faxes on it. I did this using the fax program on Windows 7. I have not used the Bluetooth yet I had a spare MS wireless mini mouse I had. I will get a Bluetooth mouse soon because this will free up one of my USB ports.
Then I realized Windows 7 has a VPN Client so I tried login on to my VPN router it would not login then I realized it's a very old VPN Linksys router BEFVP41 vintage year 2002. The Linksys firmware is simply too old for Windows 7 but it works great with Windows XP Pro. I will be upgrading this router soon with a Linksys RV016 VPN router. Then I know I will be able to login to my VPN network with Windows 7. VPN networking is very important to me. When I am out in the field far away from home I like to send my photographs directly to my network drive on my home network and some printing at home too. I have VPN networking with other relatives so I can send out hour long videos of birthday parties directly to other relative's computers in complete privacy.
All in all after using the Acer AOD250-1584 netbook for just over a month yes I would still bye this netbook. I would suggest going with the 2GB memory upgrade right away. When you are doing serious work that extra memory helps. There is a 9 cell battery available for this netbook will be looking into this a 15 hour battery sound great in natural disaster with no electricity.
    Thank you
    Phillieg

"Review from a Linux user." 2010-04-28
    By S. konichek
As soon as this arrived, I installed Ubuntu on it, so this is a review from a Linux user's perspective.

But first, the hardware-- I got the blue version, and must say it looks absolutely wonderful. It has a nice gloss, it does collect fingerprints, but I find that they aren't that noticeable. It is very light, and it's screen is very clear and vivid, even on the lowest brightness-- sometimes, I can even see the screen with the back light turned off. The keyboard is really nice, I find it just as easy to use as the one at home-- the backspace button is right next to delete button, but that is a minor annoyance, and might only apply to me, cause I keep accidentally mixing the two up. Other then that, the keyboard has been spectacular-- and believe me, it's gotten quite a bit of use. I was scared that the touch-pad might be too small, but it is just right... in fact, I find it more usable then most laptop's touch-pads. The netbook itself seems quite sturdy, and is extremely light and small. The battery does last nine hours, sometimes a little less, but it is always a considerably long amount of time...

Now for the software. The netbook boots up really fast, I would say that it is almost on the same level as my more powerful desktop, which is quite good. Sleep/suspend work wonderfully, and it comes out of sleep mode in an instant. The webcam works wonderfully, and I spent some time playing with the cool effects... the microphone doesn't pick up sound as well... Compiz works fine, and it doesn't seem to slow down at all, even with the effects turned up quite a bit, so that means I can use the four workspace/box setup often seen on Youtube, should I want to. Sound, special keys, bluethooth, everything worked out of the box. Wireless is pretty good from what I can tell, my network is a bit shaky-- but then it always has been. Other networks seem to work well, but it isn't the fastest connector if the network is far away. I installed an extra GB of ram, it was immediately detected and I haven't had any problems in that regard... I can't say I've noticed a huge speed difference since installing the extra ram, but I can have Openoffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, and Songbird(Soon to be Nightingale) up, and being drawing fire on the screen all at the same time without having slowdown.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the Acer AOD250, and would buy it again in a heartbeat.

"Live Long and Prosper: The Netbook Version" 2010-04-09
    By Ella Greggs (Washington, DC)
I purchased this netbook in advance of going to a professional conference one month ago and I'm thrilled with its performance. The battery lasts nearly as long as they say (somewhere between 7-8 hours) although less long depending on what applications you are running. The keyboard is quite large enough for easy touch-typing, and the machine runs quietly. It is sufficiently slim that you can put it in a largish handbag and take it just about anywhere.

I got the Windows 7 software version, and then downloaded the free word processing package Windows Beta 2010, which is sufficient for my writing and powerpoint presentation needs. It took a little bit of experimenting to get used to how the applications layout is different from Windows XP, but now I zip around between applications with ease.

The netbook feels very light, but also very sturdy, and the larger 9-hour battery is only slightly heavier than the 3-hour version. So it's well worth it to me to have a little more weight but a lot more running time. An excellent choice for home use and basic work needs. I highly recommend this model.
